Tree Planting Event (East): Thursday 13th April 2023
Thursday saw some of our young people and carers from the East of Scotland join us and the Forestry Commission for a morning of tree planting, in order to support the re-generation of an area in Fife. This is the start of an ongoing project for FCA Scotland with more activities planned to support the Forestry Commission throughout 2023.
After a safety briefing and demonstration from the experts, our young people were desperate to get started and split into three teams, where they quickly worked out who preferred digging, planting and positioning the poles! They all worked really well together and managed to plant over 60 trees (Aspen, Willow and Birch) between them. It was really interesting to learn more about the tree planting process, and what will happen to our baby trees over the next 10 years.
It turns out tree planting is hard work so we were all ready to stop for a snack and drink, before moving onto our next task which was to straighten the poles of some already planted trees in order to support them to grow – our young people enjoyed this activity which was spread over a huge piece of land, and also helped in the search for Geoffrey the Hare who gets up to mischief amongst the newly planted trees! Unfortunately we couldn’t spot Geoffrey…..maybe next time!
Everyone really enjoyed the activity and we are looking forward to joining up with the Forestry Commission later on again in the year! Thank you to everyone who came along, and to the Forestry Commission for having us.
